Zimbabwe President declares new holiday and reshuffles government

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared September 15 an annual national public holiday, named ‘Munhumutapa Day’. The date coincides with the President’s birthday. The holiday is named after the pre-colonial Mutapa Empire, and the government states the day is intended to celebrate Zimbabwe’s historical and cultural heritage while fostering national unity.

Alongside the holiday declaration, President Mnangagwa enacted a significant government and constitutional commission reshuffle. Engineer Tafadzwa Muguti has been appointed Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works. New leadership roles were also assigned to independent commissions: Anele Ndebele will chair the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, Leslie Ncube will lead the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, and Sheuneni Kurasha has been appointed as a Commissioner to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

The announcement of the new holiday has drawn mixed reactions. While some view it as a way to recognize national history, critics have characterized the move as an attempt at personal glorification, particularly as the country faces ongoing economic and social challenges.
