Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa extends term, delays election to 2030

Zimbabwe’s parliament passed Constitutional Amendment Act No. 3/6, which President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed into law on July 7 2026. The amendment postpones the country’s scheduled general election from 2028 to 2030, effectively extending the president’s term.

Opposition parties, civil‑society groups and international observers have condemned the change, calling it a breach of democratic norms. They said the amendment weakens constitutional safeguards and vowed to challenge its legality before the Constitutional Court, arguing that several provisions are unconstitutional and were adopted through a flawed legislative process.
