Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa Advances Controversial Term‑Extension Amendment

Zimbabwe’s Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3, which would extend presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years, has cleared Parliament and is awaiting presidential assent. Critics say the change would keep President Emmerson Mnangagwa in power until 2030 without a fresh election, likening the move to an erosion of the 2013 Constitution. Opposition figures, including legal scholar Prof. Lovemore Madhuku, publicly condemned the Senate amendments.

Vice‑President Constantino Chiwenga has also voiced opposition, posting a biblical‑parable video urging that a referendum should have been held. He argued the bill bypassed constitutional requirements for citizen participation and warned against unchecked power as the amendment proceeds toward enactment.
