Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa Faces Military Opposition to Constitutional Extension

An internal faction of nine retired senior officers, led by former Air Vice‑Marshal Henry Muchena, has joined Vice President Constantino Chiwenga in organising opposition to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s constitutional amendment that lengthens presidential terms. The Constitution Amendment Act No. 3, passed in 2026, extends the presidential and parliamentary term from five to seven years and pushes the next general election from 2028 to 2030, while transferring the presidential election from a popular vote to a parliamentary decision. The retired commanders are seeking alliances with civil‑society groups, trade unions and opposition parties to block Mnangagwa’s plan to remain in power until 2030 and possibly beyond. At the same time, Mnangagwa’s supporters such as ZANU‑PF Harare provincial chair Godwills Masimirembwa have called for an additional seven‑year extension, proposing his leadership to continue until 2037. The power struggle underscores a split within the liberation‑war elites that have dominated Zimbabwean politics since independence.
