Zimbabwe President Mnangagwa reshuffles economic cabinet
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has restructured Zimbabwe’s economic leadership by splitting the previously combined economic portfolios. Professor Mthuli Ncube, who has served as Finance Minister since 2018, will continue to lead a slimmed-down Ministry of Finance, retaining responsibility for the national budget, taxation, and public debt.
Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a prominent businessman and Sakunda Holdings magnate, has been appointed as the new Minister of Economic Development and Investment Promotion. This marks Tagwirei’s first formal government portfolio. His new role will focus on economic planning and managing foreign and local investment promotion.
The reshuffle is viewed by political observers as a significant move in the internal succession dynamics of the ruling ZANU PF party. Tagwirei, a long-time ally of the President, is seen by some as a preferred successor, potentially challenging the position of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
