Zimbabwe secures funding to modernize Chirundu border post

The Government of Zimbabwe has announced a financing agreement to modernize the Chirundu border post on the border with Zambia. The project is being undertaken through a partnership with the Chirundu Border Consortium to reduce delays at this critical transit point in the North-South Corridor.

Chirundu serves as a vital link between South African and Mozambican ports and the copper belt of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, facilitating the movement of copper, cobalt, fuel, and mining equipment. The modernization will involve renewing existing infrastructure and introducing advanced processing systems to alleviate frequent congestion.

While the final investment amount for this public-private partnership was not disclosed, the government previously indicated the project would cost approximately $66.8 million. The facility will be operated by private investors for 20 years under a concession contract. Safaga International, which led the modernization of the Beitbridge border post, is leading this initiative.
