Zimbabwe sesame production reaches 2,315 tons as export demand grows
Sesame is emerging as a vital cash crop in Zimbabwe, offering a way to boost foreign currency earnings through exports and support livelihoods across the agricultural value chain. The Agricultural Marketing Authority (AMA) noted that the crop is high-value and drought-tolerant, making it an ideal option for small-scale farmers in semi-arid regions facing erratic rainfall due to climate change.
As a low-input crop requiring minimal chemical use, sesame serves as a resilient alternative to cotton. The seeds are in high demand globally for edible oil and protein feed. The AMA reported that the 2025/26 sesame marketing season concluded with 2.3 million kilograms produced, valued at approximately US$1.84 million through registered buyers.
