Zimbabwean leaders signal potential for extended Mnangagwa presidency

Speculation is growing in Zimbabwe regarding President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s potential to extend his tenure in office. Discussions have centered on Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 4 (CAB4), following public calls by Joshua Maponga to replace the constitutional republic with an ‘Indigenous Consultative Royal Democracy,’ naming Mnangagwa as its first monarch.

During the Sanganai/Hlanganani Tourism Expo in September 2026, Mnangagwa reportedly stated that he would still be in power in nine years. This follows strategic appointments within the state machinery, including the promotion of his son, Sean Mnangagwa, to Lieutenant-Colonel in the Zimbabwe National Army.

Furthering this narrative of continuity, ZANU PF Youth League Deputy Secretary John Paradza recently described Mnangagwa as a ‘modern-day Munhumutapa’ during Munhumutapa Day celebrations in Mvurwi. Paradza issued a warning to potential successors within the party, stating, ‘Those who are aiming to succeed the President, please wait. We know you. President Mnangagwa is in charge.’
