Zio Prefecture, Togo: Transhumance conflicts impact women farmers

In the Zio Prefecture of Togo, located approximately 30 kilometers from Lomé, ongoing conflicts between farmers and herders due to transhumance are creating significant challenges for rural women. The movement of livestock through agricultural lands, often bypassing designated corridors, has led to the destruction of essential crops such as maize, cassava, and beans.

These agro-pastoral conflicts disproportionately affect female farmers in localities like Assomé and Bolou. For many women, the loss of harvests compromises household income and threatens family livelihoods. Beyond economic damage, these incidents raise concerns regarding security, the accumulation of debt, and the difficulty of accessing legal or financial reparations without facing retaliation.
