Zion Williamson seeks leadership role with Pelicans
Zion Williamson has expressed a desire to step into a greater leadership role for the New Orleans Pelicans as he enters his eighth NBA season. The 26-year-old forward, who was the first overall pick in the 2019 Draft, acknowledged that his career has not yet reached the heights expected of him due to persistent injuries.
During Media Day, Williamson stated, “I would say I clearly need to demonstrate more leadership. I need to be a better leader and no longer just demand excellence from myself, but also from my teammates, my coaches, and everyone within the organization.” He noted mental growth and increased self-confidence in his decision-making.
Despite his immense talent, Williamson has struggled with availability, having played more than 60 games in a season only three times. He has yet to participate in a playoff game. Following a season where he averaged 21.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, he aims to use his remaining contract years to transform the franchise's trajectory.
