Turkish banking sector sees shifting interest rates and deposit trends
The Turkish banking sector is experiencing significant shifts in interest rates, deposits, and consumer credit. Following a 300 basis point reduction in funding costs by the Central Bank, interest rates for consumer loans have seen their first easing, with some rates dropping to 2.99 percent, though a wide gap remains between different banks.
Weekly statistics for the week ending September 4 show that total banking sector deposits decreased by 1.5 percent to approximately 33.7 trillion TL. During the same period, consumer loans rose by 0.36 percent, reaching 6.9 trillion TL. The total credit volume, including the Central Bank, increased to 27.3 trillion TL.
Banks are also engaging in aggressive promotional campaigns. Ziraat Bankası is offering interest-free loans of up to 25,000 TL for certain customers and tiered pension promotions up to 12,000 TL. Similarly, Yapı Kredi is offering pension transfer promotions that can reach up to 30,000 TL when combined with additional requirements like bill payments and credit card usage.
In the automotive sector, a slowdown in sales has prompted manufacturers to introduce significant discounts, with some models seeing price reductions of 300,000 to 400,000 TL to stimulate demand.
