Zirci Arboretum lake faces severe water shortage

The lake at the Zirci Cistercian Arboretum has significantly dried up, with water levels dropping to just 40 centimeters. This is approximately one-fifth of its typical depth.

Administrators note that the lake serves as a sensitive indicator of the water balance in the Bakony region. The issue is not merely a lack of rainfall, but rather the timing, intensity, and duration of dry periods. Due to the karst water system in the Bakony, much of the precipitation seeps through limestone and dolomite cracks into underground systems, making the area particularly vulnerable.

The lake is fed by the Cuha stream. While the stream has historically experienced seasonal drying—its name even derives from a Slavic word meaning 'dry'—the current concern lies in the increasing frequency and length of these water shortages. Similar low water levels are being observed in other parts of the Bakony, including the Mayer Lake, which is currently missing approximately 60 centimeters of water.
