German and Austrian summer festivals adjust to record heat
Across Germany and Austria, summer festivals in late June and early July 2026 faced unusually high temperatures, often reaching or exceeding 40 °C. Organisers responded with additional water stations, misting systems, cooling areas and by shifting programme highlights to the cooler evenings. The Ludwigsburg Marktplatzfest saw a quiet midday but a densely packed evening crowd, while the Trier Altstadtfest reported lower midday attendance and a strong evening turnout without heat‑related medical incidents. In Augsburg, the “Sommernächte” attracted a record 125 000 visitors over three nights; a pepper‑spray incident on Friday night injured 34 people, prompting a sizable police and rescue response, but no heat‑related injuries were recorded. Similar adaptations were made at the Krefeld Heufest, where some planned activities were cancelled or shortened due to the heat, and at the Heufest‑tour in the Krefelder Norden, where programme points were cut and visitor numbers stayed modest. Other events, such as the Lauffener Musikfest, the Fritz‑Reuter‑Festspiele, and various open‑air cinema and music festivals, reported successful evenings with full audiences and no significant heat‑related emergencies. Overall, the festivals managed to maintain attendance and safety through proactive cooling measures and evening‑focused programming.
