Zivals record store faces expropriation for Buenos Aires subway project
The historic record store and bookstore Zivals, located at the intersection of Corrientes and Callao avenues in Buenos Aires, faces potential closure due to a government plan to expropriate the property. The site is slated for demolition to facilitate the construction of a station for the future Subte Line F.
Owner Fernando Laviz has criticized the decision, noting that the current project requires the expropriation of over 1,000 square meters, including sales areas, warehouses, offices, and residences. Laviz argues that technical alternatives exist, such as the original design which proposed a station on Tucumán Street, or locating access points in nearby buildings or alleys to avoid destroying the cultural landmark.
The property is considered a point of cultural interest, housing a mural of Charly García. Critics of the plan suggest that the government's decision to move the station location lacks technical justification and threatens the city's cultural identity.
