Ziya Öztürkler identifies water and energy as strategic powers for TRNC

Ziya Öztürkler, Speaker of the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), stated that water, energy, and natural gas have become essential elements of strategic power in the modern world. Speaking at a conference in Hatay, Turkey, titled ‘The Cyprus Issue and Our National Cause from the Past to the Future,’ Öztürkler emphasized that the TRNC will be strengthened strategically through joint projects with the Republic of Türkiye.

Key initiatives mentioned include the ‘Century Water Project,’ natural gas developments, the expansion of Ercan Airport, the construction of hospitals, and the support of universities. Öztürkler noted that these projects aim to integrate the TRNC more deeply with the global community. He also highlighted the importance of the Turkish military presence on the island, asserting that Türkiye’s role as a guarantor is indispensable for the security of the Turkish Cypriot people.

Additionally, Öztürkler criticized the recent armament activities of the Greek Cypriot administration, noting their increasing military cooperation with countries such as France and Israel. He stressed that a strong Republic of Türkiye is fundamental to a strong TRNC and called for continued unity between the two.
