Zlatograd archaeologists discover 14th-century Byzantine gold signet ring

Archaeologists have discovered a unique 14th-century gold signet ring in the Zlatograd region of Bulgaria. The artifact is believed to have belonged to a prominent Byzantine aristocrat named Maria Sevaste Skulena.

According to Professor Nikolay Ovcharov, the ring was used to seal important documents. Historical records from 1338 mention her husband, Sevast Skules, as a significant landowner in the Belomorie region. The discovery, which also includes gold coins from the same era, was found near a route leading toward Greece, suggesting the owner may have lost it while traveling through the mountain pass.

The find provides significant insight into the role of women within Byzantine aristocracy and the trade and travel connections of the Ahrydus region, of which Perperikon was a central hub. The artifact is currently housed in the archaeological museum in Zlatograd.
