Zlín to reconstruct Velké kino for 640 million CZK
The city of Zlín has signed a contract with PSG Construction to reconstruct the historic Velké kino, a landmark building originally constructed by Baťa in 1932. The project is valued at 640 million CZK, with the city expected to receive approximately 200 million CZK in subsidies. Construction is scheduled to begin this year, with completion targeted for 2029.
The building has been closed since 2016 due to serious structural and static issues. The renovation will transform the cinema into a multifunctional center featuring two halls. The main hall will utilize retractable seating to accommodate 800 seated guests or up to 1,420 people for standing events, serving films, concerts, and conferences. A second, smaller hall will hold approximately 150 to 200 people for theater, dance, and intimate musical performances.
While the interior layout will change, the distinctive Baťa architecture and original steel structures will be preserved through the addition of a new external steel frame to ensure stability. Additionally, the project includes the construction of an underground parking lot costing an estimated 400 million CZK. This facility will provide up to 350 spaces, allowing for the removal of parking from Náměstí Práce to create a new public relaxation zone.
