Znam Movement proposes legal changes for adopted persons' access to origins
The Znam Movement parliamentary group has submitted a proposal to amend and supplement the Family Law to grant adopted individuals access to information regarding their biological origins. The proposal aims to address long-standing secrecy in adoption processes that can hinder access to essential information, particularly for health-related purposes.
The movement cited the 2024 European Court of Human Rights ruling in ‘Mitrevska v. Macedonia’ as a catalyst for the change, noting that the court found a violation of rights when access to information necessary for health was restricted. The proposed amendments do not seek to abolish adoption secrecy entirely; instead, they propose a legal procedure where a professional commission evaluates individual cases to decide on information access while protecting the rights of all parties involved.
