Zoe Saldaña criticizes political questioning of marginalized actors

Actor Zoe Saldaña has expressed frustration regarding the tendency of journalists to direct political questions about inclusivity and representation toward women and people of color. Speaking at the Locarno Film Festival, Saldaña described the practice as “incredibly limiting and frustrating,” noting that she often expects to discuss her craft but is instead asked to provide answers for systemic industry issues.

Saldaña argued that instead of placing the burden on the sole marginalized individual in a room, such questions should be directed at the “gatekeepers” of the industry. She noted that this dynamic forces people of color to “work double to be in a room.”

She also referenced a previous instance following her 2025 Oscar win for Best Supporting Actress, where she was questioned about whether the film “Emilia Perez” was hurtful to Mexicans. Saldaña maintained that while she regretted any offense taken, the film’s core theme was the universal experience of friendship and survival among women.
