Zoetermeer implements camera surveillance after series of car arsons

Zoetermeer Mayor Michel Bezuijen has implemented temporary camera surveillance on Parkdreef in the Seghwaert district following a series of vehicle arsons. The decision follows three car fires occurring between August and October, with the most recent incident taking place in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The fires, which occurred in a parking area beneath residential buildings, forced dozens of residents to evacuate their homes during the night. In the latest incident, two adjacent vehicles also sustained damage. While police investigations are ongoing to determine if the fires are linked or caused by arson, local residents have expressed concerns regarding a recurring individual seen on previous footage.

The surveillance measure is intended to act as a deterrent and allow for better monitoring to prevent further disturbances to public order. The cameras are scheduled to remain in place for approximately three months, with the current measure set to conclude in January 2027.
