Zoetermeer pushes local impact focus as community hosts asylum‑seeker meet‑up

During a council debate on the coalition agreement, local leaders expressed disappointment that most attention was on refugee boats. Council members urged the municipal board to direct energy toward initiatives with tangible city impact, such as neighbourhood plans involving residents, noting that the current contract for the Leefbaar Maessluys asylum centre ends in 2026‑27 with a broader agreement extending to around 2030.

On 18 June, Zoetermeer organised a meeting afternoon that brought together more than 400 residents of the CO‑A asylum‑seeker centre, local volunteers and neighbourhood inhabitants. The event, run by the InterLevensbeschouwelijk Overleg Zoetermeer with COA support, included activities for children, personal story‑sharing and a concluding barbecue, aiming to foster mutual understanding and stronger social cohesion. Organisers seek additional donations and volunteers to support food, supplies and logistics.
