Zofri users warn bank closures threaten Iquique commerce

The Asociación Usuarios Zofri (AUZ) has warned that the closure of bank branches and customer checking accounts within the Iquique Free Trade Zone (Zofri) threatens the security and continuity of regional commerce. The organization has submitted documentation to national and regional authorities, including the Ministers of Finance and Economy, requesting specific mechanisms to reinforce financial control without disrupting the zone's dynamics.

According to AUZ manager Darío Blanco Leiva, the situation is critical following the elimination of cash reception in both national and foreign currencies. While BCI and Scotiabank were the only entities remaining in the service areas, they have announced the definitive closure of their branches by October 30, following previous closures by Banco Itaú and Banco Santander.

The association reports that a significant number of checking accounts belonging to both national and foreign users are also being closed. This trend forces entrepreneurs, workers, and clients to travel to central Iquique for cash operations, increasing their exposure to theft and crime. The situation particularly impacts foreign buyers, such as those from Bolivia, who rely heavily on cash for commercial operations.
