Albania and North Macedonia face political and social tensions

Political and social tensions are rising across the region. In Albania, ongoing protests against Prime Minister Edi Rama's administration have drawn international media attention, with reports highlighting youth-led movements against perceived autocratic governance. Tensions also flared during a protest in Tirana when a dispute over a microphone led to a podium collapse.

In North Macedonia, the Alliance for Albanians has criticized a state ceremony marking the 25th anniversary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Rapid Intervention Unit (EBR). The group alleged that the event lacked Albanian language representation and ethnic Albanian participation, calling it an institutional erasure of the community.

Other regional developments include significant migration flows at the Kakavija border crossing between Albania and Greece, and a US federal court ruling that overturned a ban on immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, including North Macedonia. Additionally, religious tensions were noted in Vushtrri, Kosovo, regarding the construction of a Catholic church, which sparked local protests and debate over secularism and social cohesion.
