Zografou arson attack linked to organized fan violence
Greek police have arrested two men, aged 33 and 35, following an arson attack in the Zografou area of Athens on September 14, 2026. The investigation revealed that the attack was motivated by organized sports violence and was intended to target a high-ranking member of the Panathinaikos fan group known as ‘Vili’.
Due to a misidentification of the target, the perpetrators instead set fire to a vehicle belonging to a local deputy mayor. The blaze also caused damage to two motorcycles and an apartment building, creating a significant risk to the lives of residents and passersby.
Authorities have charged the suspects with gang activity, arson, possession of explosives, and property damage. The investigation indicates the attack stemmed from a conflict between rival fan factions, which police suggest is linked to broader criminal activities including drug trafficking and extortion.
