Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu warns against AI coding over-reliance

Zoho founder Sridhar Vembu has cautioned software engineers against an over-reliance on artificial intelligence, warning that developers must not cede their fundamental understanding of the systems they build.

Vembu’s comments were a response to a viral post on X by a software engineer describing the intensive use of Anthropic’s Claude Code at a large company. The engineer reported that AI was being used to generate nearly every aspect of the development lifecycle, including specifications, code, tests, product requirement documents (PRDs), and reports. The post highlighted concerns that employees were being pressured to ship products at an accelerated pace, often working 12 to 13 hours a day, while spending more time directing AI tools than understanding the underlying code.

Vembu described the industry's rapid adoption of these tools as “driving too fast in a fancy new car we barely understand how to drive, inviting disaster.” He emphasized that while AI is a useful tool, engineers must maintain technical mastery to avoid the risks associated with automated output.
