Zohran Mamdani elected mayor of New York City

Zohran Mamdani, a 34‑year‑old member of the Democratic Socialists of America, won the 2025 New York mayoral election with roughly 50 % of the vote, defeating former governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent. His victory makes him the city’s first Muslim mayor and reflects strong support from younger and progressive voters.

Former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence cited Mamdani’s win while warning that the November midterm elections are “couldn’t be more important,” using the New York result as evidence of a surge in socialist candidates across states such as Colorado, Maine and Michigan.
