Zohran Mamdani faces criticism over definition of socialism

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn criticism following remarks regarding his definition of socialism during a podcast interview with Theo Von. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, stated that socialism involves the government ensuring citizens have “whatever you need to live a dignified life.”

He described this as an extension of democracy from the ballot box into daily life, including the workplace and home. Mamdani identified housing, childcare, and public transit as “non-negotiables” that no one should be priced out of.

Critics, including City Council Minority Leader David Carr, have challenged these views. Carr remarked that Mamdani’s definition “sounds a lot like” state-controlled “totalitarianism,” arguing that most people would not want a state where the government determines their needs.
