Mayor Zohran Mamdani faces backlash over October 7 anniversary remarks

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has drawn intense criticism from both Jewish leaders and pro-Palestinian activists following a statement issued on the third anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks. While Mamdani acknowledged the horrific war crimes committed by Hamas, which killed over 1,100 Israelis and abducted 251 people, his remarks pivoted to condemn the Israeli government’s military actions in Gaza as an “ongoing genocide.” He cited a death toll of more than 74,000 Palestinians, including over 21,000 children, and accused the U.S. federal government of complicity through arms shipments.

Jewish organizations, including the Anti-Defamation League and the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, accused the mayor of “weaponizing” a day of mourning to push anti-Zionist agendas. Some leaders called for his resignation, labeling his rhetoric antisemitic.

Simultaneously, Mamdani faced backlash from pro-Palestinian demonstrators during a candlelight vigil in Union Square. Protesters disrupted the event, chanting slogans and labeling the mayor a “traitor” for attending a memorial for Israeli victims. Mamdani has defended his position, stating he is proud to attend such vigils to mourn all lives lost and that he “signed up” for the political scrutiny that comes with his office.
