Zohran Mamdani uses influencer network to promote NYC policies

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is reportedly utilizing a network of approximately 200 social media influencers to promote city policies and public priorities. According to reports from the Columbia Journalism Review, these influencers, primarily active on TikTok and Instagram, are used to encourage civic engagement, such as voting, medical visits, and composting.

The administration reportedly manages this network through influencer-only press briefings and an encrypted Signal group. This group, which originated from the ‘Creators4Zohran’ organization that supported the mayor’s election campaign, serves as a communication channel where influencers receive talking points, video clips, and daily city updates.

While the Signal group itself does not pay participants, some influencers are hired by city agencies as independent contractors for specific messaging campaigns. The use of encrypted messaging for distributing official talking points has raised questions regarding potential violations of local record-keeping laws.
