Zoi Konstantopoulou denounces wiretapping scandal as crime against democracy

Zoi Konstantopoulou, president of Plevesi Eleftherias, has condemned the ongoing wiretapping scandal in Greece, labeling it a "crime against democracy." She criticized the decision by the new Prosecutor of the Supreme Court, Evangelos Bakellas, to refrain from further investigating the scandal, despite a February 2026 court decision from the Athens Misdemeanor Court that ordered continued judicial proceedings.

Konstantopoulou accused the Association of Greek Prosecutors of attempting to discredit Zakarias Kesse, a lawyer actively representing victims of the surveillance. She characterized the recent actions of the judiciary as attempts to cover up crimes that implicate the administration and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

She noted that Bakellas is the fourth prosecutor appointed by the Mitsotakis government to hold this position who she claims has acted to obscure the truth. Konstantopoulou emphasized that democratic forces, lawyers, and journalists will continue to fight for transparency and justice regarding the surveillance case.
