Zolani Tete, two-time world boxing champion, murdered in South Africa

Two-time world boxing champion Zolani Tete, 38, was shot and killed in an apparent ambush outside his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape, on Friday evening. The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. as Tete was waiting for his driveway gate to open.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, two armed suspects wearing balaclavas emerged from a vehicle and opened fire on Tete and a 27-year-old female passenger. Tete attempted to drive his vehicle into his yard to escape the gunfire but succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The female passenger sustained multiple gunshot wounds and remains hospitalized.

South African Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie confirmed the death, describing Tete as one of the finest fighters the country has ever produced. Tete was a highly accomplished boxer, holding IBF super flyweight and WBO bantamweight titles. He also holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest knockout in a world title fight, having defeated Siboniso Gonya in just 11 seconds in 2017.

Police have launched murder and attempted murder investigations. The suspects fled the scene and remain at large, and the motive for the attack is currently unknown.
