Zoltán Kocsis facing posthumous allegations of abuse
A controversy has emerged in the Hungarian music community following allegations made by Alexander-technique teacher Juli Kepes regarding the late pianist Zoltán Kocsis. Kepes stated in a social media post that while Kocsis was a fantastic musician, he was also an abusive and often cruel individual who caused significant harm.
Kepes recounted an incident during a course for young pianists where she and the students decided to remove a portrait of Kocsis from the room, claiming his presence created a sense of tension and anxiety. These comments have sparked intense backlash from various musicians and institutions.
Gyula Nyári, president of the Hungarian Barzongorists Association, and other colleagues have defended Kocsis, criticizing the timing and nature of the remarks against a deceased artist. Additionally, students from the Bartók Conservatory have issued a statement supporting Kocsis, asserting that his artistry remains a motivation for them and stating they have no intention of removing his image.
