Argentina's Zonda wind sparks fires and power outages across multiple provinces

A strong Zonda wind system swept western Argentina on 18 July, prompting the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional to issue yellow and orange alerts in several provinces. In La Rioja, the wind knocked down three medium‑voltage power columns, leaving towns such as Vinchina and Villa Castelli without electricity while crews from Edelar worked to restore service.

In Tucumán, the wind drove temperatures up to 35 °C, caused dust storms, and ignited multiple fires, including a truck blaze on the Tucumán‑Famaillá highway that spread to nearby pastures. The province recorded heat‑index values near 36 °C and widespread power line damage. Similar fire incidents were reported in Salta’s Campo Quijano area and the Mi Refugio neighbourhood of Salta city, where strong gusts knocked down poles and forced evacuations. San Juan’s Médano de Oro district also saw a garbage‑burning fire expand rapidly under the gusty conditions.

Authorities in Jujuy, Salta, and other affected regions warned of falling trees, roof collapses, and reduced visibility, urging residents to secure objects, avoid outdoor activities during the strongest gusts, and follow emergency instructions. Emergency services, including fire brigades and police, were deployed across the affected zones to combat the blazes and restore electricity.
