Zonda winds impact San Juan and Mendoza provinces

The Zonda wind phenomenon is affecting the Argentine provinces of San Juan and Mendoza, prompting weather alerts and activity cancellations.

In San Juan, the Liga Sanjuanina de Fútbol (LSF) suspended all scheduled matches for Sunday to ensure the safety of players, technical staff, referees, and spectators. The decision follows a yellow alert for wind gusts reaching up to 50 km/h. Matches for the Primera A and Divisional B categories have been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 23, while schedules for women's football, youth divisions, and the Liga Infantil (LIFI) will be announced in the coming days.

In Mendoza, the Zonda wind has been active since the early morning hours, impacting the Greater Mendoza area as well as San Rafael, Malargüe, and the Uco Valley. Forecasts indicate gusts between 40 and 45 km/h may persist in the afternoon across several departments. Conditions are expected to shift by Monday, September 21, with lighter winds and clearer skies expected in most areas, though temperatures in Malargüe could drop as low as 2°C.
