Zondacrypto affair sparks political crisis in Poland

The Zondacrypto affair has intensified in Poland, centering on allegations that former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro received 450,000 PLN for his foundation from Przemysław Kral, the head of the defunct cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto. The scandal has triggered significant political fallout, with recent polls indicating that 56.8% of Poles believe the Law and Justice (PiS) party should remove Ziobro from its ranks.

There is growing public pressure for the Sejm to establish a parliamentary investigative commission to examine the links between Zondacrypto and various political figures. While some politicians, including former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, have suggested a commission is necessary, others argue that the ongoing prosecutor's investigation is sufficient and that a political commission would merely serve as “theatre.”

The investigation also touches upon suspicions of money laundering, fraud, and the disappearance of BitBay founder Sylwester Suszek. Additionally, public sentiment regarding Roman Giertych, a member of the Civic Coalition (KO) acting as legal counsel for Przemysław Kral, has been largely negative, with 51.6% of respondents viewing his defense of Kral unfavorably.
