Zondacrypto scandal sparks political crisis and calls for inquiry in Poland

The Zondacrypto cryptocurrency exchange scandal has escalated into a major political crisis in Poland. The Regional Prosecutor's Office in Katowice is investigating suspected deception regarding the purchase and storage of digital assets, with losses estimated at least 2.4 billion PLN affecting over 1,000 citizens.

Former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has called for a parliamentary commission of inquiry to examine state actions since 2019. He alleged that intelligence services were aware of the exchange's fraudulent mechanisms as early as late summer 2025 but failed to warn the public.

Within the Law and Justice (PiS) party, Jarosław Kaczyński has announced an internal investigation following reports of MP Michał Moskal's meeting with Zondacrypto head Przemysław Kral in Ibiza. While Moskal denied any wrongdoing or receipt of funds, PiS leaders have criticized the encounter. Kaczyński has proposed an alternative solution: a Public Trust Commission composed of 15 experts rather than politicians to ensure a non-partisan investigation.
