Zonguldak and Essen host Green Transformation and Energy Forum

The Zonguldak and Essen Green Transformation and Energy Forum was held to strengthen economic and industrial cooperation between the Turkish city of Zonguldak and the German city of Essen. Organizers highlighted the historical and social ties between the two regions, noting their shared industrial heritage rooted in coal mining.

During the forum, Erdemir R&D Director Dr. Oğuz Gündüz outlined the company’s strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. The decarbonization roadmap includes reducing emissions by 25% by 2030 and 40% by 2040 through energy efficiency, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies. To support this transition, the group plans a total renewable energy investment of approximately 1.85 GW, split between Erdemir (775 MW) and İsdemir (1072 MW), aiming for an annual production of 3.20 million megawatt-hours.

Participants emphasized that the transition requires managing raw materials, production processes, and investment economics holistically rather than simply replacing coal with electricity.
