Zonguldak Climate Summit calls for justice and green transition

The Zonguldak Climate Summit, held at the TMMOB Chamber of Mining Engineers, brought together academics, environmental activists, political representatives, and NGOs to address the ecological and economic challenges facing the Western Black Sea region.

Participants highlighted the severe environmental impact of heavy industry and thermal power plants, noting significant air pollution and regional temperature increases of up to 8 degrees Celsius. Experts warned that environmental degradation is driving population migration, which in turn negatively impacts the local economy.

Speakers called for 'justice for Zonguldak,' advocating for positive discrimination and preferential access to international funds designed for a 'just transition.' The summit emphasized the necessity of green transformation and biomass utilization in response to the European Union’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. Discussions also focused on the implications of coal phase-out and carbon reduction strategies ahead of the COP 31 preparations.
