Zoo Dortmund faces criticism over twelve lion cubs

Zoo Dortmund is facing significant debate following the birth of twelve lion cubs to lionesses Zuri and Saba. The cubs, fathered by a six-year-old male named Boeti, were born within a three-day period in late July. The group consists of eight males and four females.

While the zoo initially celebrated the births as a contribution to international species conservation, experts have challenged this claim. Conservationists argue the cubs are “zoo hybrids” because the parents belong to two different lion subspecies, making them largely irrelevant to genetically defined conservation programs.

The European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) had reportedly advised the zoo to limit or cease breeding, though no formal ban was issued. Zoo Dortmund stated the decision to breed was made under its own responsibility, citing animal welfare and the desire to allow the pride to raise their own young. Due to enclosure size constraints, the surplus animals will be transferred to other zoos.
