Zoo Duisburg adds male fossa Zaza to European breeding program
The Zoo Duisburg in Germany has welcomed an eight‑year‑old male fossa named Zaza to its collection. Zaza arrived from the San Diego Zoo in the United States after previously residing at Chester Zoo in the United Kingdom. His transfer follows a recommendation from the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) to bolster the zoo’s breeding efforts.
Zaza joins the existing male fossa Isaloh, and together they will be paired with three female fossas – Sina, Kinja and Beroketa – to produce offspring. The zoo’s fossa breeding program is one of the largest in Europe, and the species is classified as highly endangered, with only about 2,500 individuals estimated to remain in the wild on Madagascar.
