Zoo Karlsruhe euthanizes senior short-clawed otter Torben

Zoo Karlsruhe has announced the euthanasia of Torben, a short-clawed otter that was nearly 16 years old. The decision followed a veterinary examination that revealed severe dental issues and jaw changes, which had caused the animal to stop eating properly.

Torben, who was born at Hagenbeck Tierpark and Tropen-Aquarium, had lived at the Karlsruhe zoo since 2012. His age was considered high for the species, as short-clawed otters typically live between 10 and 15 years in the wild.

The zoo intends to continue its short-clawed otter program. Tabea, a nine-year-old female and Torben’s long-term partner, is currently living alone. Because short-clawed otters are social animals that live in pairs or family groups, the zoo is working with the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP) to find a new companion for her to ensure her well-being and support species conservation efforts.
