Zoo Leipzig to Open 'Feuerland' Exhibit on September 1, 2026

Zoo Leipzig is completing final construction, technical installations and landscaping for its new "Feuerland" exhibition, slated to open on 1 September 2026. The attraction will feature a more than 100‑metre underwater tunnel that lets visitors watch penguins and seals swim from a unique perspective, alongside educational zones about South American wildlife and the zoo’s conservation work.

The first animals have already been moved into the back‑area of the new habitat. Humboldt penguins from other zoos and the zoo’s own seal population have been relocated, while the project also highlights three highly endangered species: the tiny Darwin‑leaf frog, the southern river otter and the Humboldt penguin. "We are thrilled to welcome guests to the adventure of Feuerland soon. We aim to open on 1 September," said Zoo Director Prof. Jörg Junhold.
