Zoo Ostrava and University of Ostrava expand academic partnership

Zoo Ostrava and the Faculty of Science at the University of Ostrava have signed a memorandum to deepen their long-standing cooperation. The partnership aims to bridge the gap between theoretical education and practical application through enhanced student internships, joint scientific research, and shared teaching responsibilities.

Under the new agreement, students in the upcoming Zoology study program may undertake internships lasting up to three months at the zoo. Zoo experts will participate in university teaching, while students will gain hands-on experience in real-world environments. Current collaborative efforts already include monitoring approximately 40 ponds and conducting ornithological studies using a network of about 300 nesting boxes.

Zuzana Václavíková, Dean of the Faculty of Science, noted that student research currently accounts for about one-third of all recorded research activities at the zoo. The partnership is also expected to foster joint scientific publications and volunteer activities for both students and staff, ultimately helping the region retain scientific talent.
