Zoológico de León in Mexico reports death of a bison after fatal fight
The Zoológico de León in León, Guanajuato, Mexico confirmed that a male American bison (Bison bison) died after sustaining severe injuries during a dominance confrontation with another male of its group. Veterinary staff provided intensive care, but necropsy findings revealed an irreversible lumbar vertebra fracture and a broken seventh right rib, which caused total loss of limb mobility. The zoo elected to perform humane euthanasia to prevent further suffering.
The bison's death occurs just five days after the zoo reported the loss of a 21‑year‑old reticulated giraffe named Oldie, which died following an accident in its enclosure. The zoo said additional laboratory analyses will complete the diagnostic report for the bison.
