Zoox launches commercial robotaxi services with NHTSA exemption

Amazon-owned Zoox is transitioning from demonstration operations to commercial robotaxi services. Following a regulatory exemption from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the company is permitted to operate a fleet of up to 2,500 autonomous vehicles for a two-year period. These purpose-built electric vehicles lack traditional controls such as steering wheels and pedals, featuring carriage-style seating designed for up to four passengers.

In Las Vegas, Zoox is moving from free public rides to paid commercial trips effective August 10, 2026. While the company has not released a fixed fare card, pricing is expected to align with the "Comfort" tier of existing ride-hailing services, potentially ranging between $29 and $35 per trip.

The shift marks a significant milestone for autonomous mobility, as the NHTSA exemption provides a regulatory framework for vehicles that do not conform to standard driver-operated design requirements.
