Zoox to charge for robotaxi rides in Las Vegas
Amazon‑owned Zoox will begin charging passengers for its driverless robotaxi service in Las Vegas starting on August 10, after receiving a two‑year exemption from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The exemption allows deployment of up to 2,500 purpose‑built electric shuttles and waives eight federal motor‑vehicle safety standards that normally require a steering wheel, pedals and related controls.
Zoox says fares will be calculated from a base charge plus time and distance, with any destination‑specific fees disclosed up front; the price will not increase if the vehicle takes a longer route. Pricing is positioned at the “comfort” tier used by other ride‑hailing apps, roughly 20‑40 % higher than standard services. The company has previously offered free rides in Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin and Miami, transporting nearly one million passengers during the testing phase. The commercial launch intensifies competition with Alphabet’s Waymo and Tesla in the U.S. autonomous‑vehicle market.
