Zoox launches paid robotaxi service in Las Vegas

Amazon-owned Zoox has launched paid autonomous robotaxi services in Las Vegas, specifically providing transportation between Harry Reid International Airport and the Las Vegas Strip. The vehicles feature a unique carriage-style seating arrangement where four passengers face each other, and they utilize lights and audio cues to assist riders in busy airport pickup areas.

Unlike competitors that adapt existing car models, Zoox designs its driverless vehicles from the ground up without steering wheels or pedals. This custom design allows for safety innovations such as a horseshoe-shaped airbag that envelops passengers. The company recently received a temporary exemption from certain federal motor vehicle safety standards from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, clearing a significant regulatory hurdle.

Following the Las Vegas launch, Zoox has announced plans to expand its driverless service to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, and Austin. The company's robotaxis have also become available through the Uber app.
