Zoran Milanović warns of Croatia's tourism dependency in Makarska

During a ceremonial City Council session celebrating Makarska City Day, Croatian President Zoran Milanović warned that the country relies too heavily on tourism. He noted that while attractions like Biokovo National Park, the sun, and the sea provide a competitive advantage, these natural resources must be protected.

Milanović emphasized that the nation must not “cut the branch we are sitting on.” He identified waste management and disposal as one of Croatia's most significant and long-standing challenges, citing illegal dumping in Gospić as a source of public frustration. He also criticized the complexity of public procurement processes, noting that delays in repairs and infrastructure can have serious consequences.

The event, attended by various dignitaries and international delegations, also featured a musical performance by Makarska Mayor Zoran Paunović, who concluded his speech by playing the trumpet alongside piano accompaniment.
