Zoran Stevanović faces scrutiny over land deal for Orthodox church

Slovenian National Assembly President Zoran Stevanović is facing allegations of abusing his office following leaked footage from a meeting with the Serbian cultural association Brdo. In the recording, Stevanović stated he was “damn proud” that his high-ranking position helped him secure a donor for the purchase of land intended for an Orthodox church in Kranj.

The potential donor is identified as Mladen Milanović, owner of MG Mind and one of the wealthiest businessmen in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The land in question, valued between €400,000 and €600,000, is currently designated as a cemetery in the municipal spatial plan, though Kranj Mayor Matjaž Rakovec suggested its use could be changed to a sacred purpose through an accelerated procedure.

Stevanović has defended his actions, stating that the purpose of politics is to help people and that no formal tender or illegal procedure has taken place. However, Boštjan Penko, former director of the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption, has called for police and prosecutorial investigations, asserting that the President of the National Assembly cannot act as a real estate agent.
