ZOZO NEXT and AVITA partner on humanoid robot clothing research
ZOZO NEXT and the physical AI startup AVITA have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to conduct joint research on clothing specifically designed for humanoid robots. The partnership aims to establish design methods for materials and garments that accommodate the unique structural and movement characteristics of robots, which differ significantly from humans in terms of joint articulation and heat dissipation.
The collaboration seeks to combine ZOZO NEXT’s expertise in smart textiles, pattern design, and fashion data with AVITA’s research into robot movement and human-robot interaction. By integrating functional capabilities—such as contact sensing or displaying operational intent through clothing—the companies hope to enhance safety and efficiency in sectors like hospitality and nursing care.
The research is targeted to begin in January 2027. This initiative aligns with broader Japanese government goals to implement large-scale AI robotics across various industries to address labor shortages.
